My passion for horses began at a very young age. As a child, I sat and watched Bob Loomis training videos over cartoons. I competed in 4-H all throughout school mainly in barrel racing but I did attempt other classes as well. I got my first 3 year old when I was 14 years old and he was my first horse that I trained myself. He taught me a lot about being connected and building respect for each other.
A few years later, I took a job at Houston SPCA where I worked in the barn with horses. I got the opportunity to experience a wide variety of breeds, ages, medical and behavioral issues while working there. It taught me how important it was to be able to manage emergency situations and also gain a deep trust with each horse so they could be cared for the way they needed. Some may have never been touched but had a gaping wound on their leg that needed to be addressed. Colic was a regular occurrence and they may need to be put into the stocks. The daily “normal” situations at this job day in and day out are what the average horse owner may not ever experience…but I feel is good to set your horse up to be able to go through should anything happen.
In 2010, I came into the horse industry trading horses which then turned into a training business along with riding lessons. In trading horses, I once again was able to experience a wide variety of horses. I saw how horses were thrown away because they were ”bad”. Over the years, I’ve learned how to find where the hole in a horse is. Where things went wrong. Most of the time, I found horses just needed a different set of hands, mental reset, or underlying medical/physical issues addressed. A horse is not a car. You need to be a good match for them and be willing to put in the work just as you are asking them to do for you.
In the last 14 years, I have also competed in barrels, ranch sorting, ranch classes, and trail competitions. I’ve been able to take horses that have been blown up in one area and set them up for success in another discipline.
I believe there isn’t necessarily a perfect horse…it’s what you’re willing to put in as to what you will get back.
At MJC Equine, I offer training. Whether that be a behavior issue that needs to be addressed or just furthering a horse in their riding. I also offer consignment if you are needing to sell your horse.
